From Humble Beginnings to Global Hub: The Rise of Bangladesh Garments
If you check the tag on your favorite t-shirt, jeans, or knit sweater right now, there is a remarkably high chance you will see three words: Made in Bangladesh. What started as a modest tailoring initiative in the 1960s has exploded into an industrial juggernaut. Today, the Ready-Made Garments (RMG) sector is the beating heart of the Bangladeshi economy.
The Pioneers of an Industry
The story of the RMG sector officially began in the late 1960s and 1970s with trailblazers like Riaz Garments, Jewel Garments, and Paris Garments. Initially starting with a tiny export of shirts, the industry rapidly gained momentum. Favorable international trade dynamics, such as the Multi-Fibre Arrangement (MFA) quotas, pushed foreign buyers to look toward Bangladesh. Entrepreneurs quickly capitalized on the country’s demographic dividend, setting up factories to meet the surging global demand.
The Economic Engine
The numbers behind Bangladesh’s garment sector are staggering. It is the nation’s largest export earner, accounting for roughly 76% to 80% of total export revenues. Even more importantly, it is an engine of social transformation. The sector employs over 4 million people—the vast majority of whom are women. For millions of rural women, the garment industry has provided their first opportunity for financial independence, fundamentally shifting household dynamics and boosting female empowerment across the nation.
Overcoming Challenges and Turning Green
The industry’s exponential growth hasn’t been without growing pains. Tragedies in the past brought intense international scrutiny regarding workplace safety and labor rights. However, the response has been transformative.
Today, Bangladesh is pioneering the concept of green manufacturing. The country boasts the highest number of LEED-certified green garment factories in the world. Modern Bangladeshi factories feature state-of-the-art safety protocols, solar panels, and water-recycling systems. By learning from its history and adapting to the future, the Bangladesh RMG sector has proven it isn’t just surviving—it is setting the standard for the global apparel supply chain.
